I was driving to school one morning in my MR2 Spyder and I only made it half way there. I say half way because I got to a stop light and the back end of my car was smoking quite a bit and I thought the engine was shot. I called a tow truck to pick up the car and went to class while my mechanic looked at the car. Half way through the day, the mechanic calls me and asks if it was possible that I was such a dumbass that I left the parking brake partially on and set the brakes on fire slightly...the answer was yes, yes I was that dumb. There wasn’t any damage to my car, but I’ve been very deliberate and cautious with my use of the handbrake ever since.

Ooh! Ooh! I’ve got one!

In college (*no alcohol involved). Middle of the day in a snowstorm. Pulling up to a T intersection, minor road into major road. There’s a car in front of me, stopped, so I start to slow down waaaay in advance because it’s snowing. But I’m thinking, I could use the momentum to get across the major road because the side road has some accumulated snow at the intersection.

I look left and right and see an ENORMOUS GAP before the next approaching car. Nothing at all in the other direction. I look at the car ahead of me, no brake lights. Great, I think, she’s off to make this gap. If I keep rolling, I’ll make it too. PLENTY of time/space.

So I look left and right again, yup still LOTS OF TIME to make it, and I look ahead again and the car is still sitting there. Not moving. Now I’m too close. Even my snow tires and a little brake pumping action (no ABS) couldn’t stop me... bam. She was in an older Oldsmobile (?) and there really wasn’t any damage. It was an extremely low-speed bump. But I still felt extremely dumb for hitting a stopped car.

“WHY DIDN’T YOU GO?!” I screamed at the top of my... mind. In reality, I apologized profusely and gave her my insurance info, which she never did anything with, thankfully.

Let’s see, s/he said “in a car”, so I’ll assume golf cart and go-cart shenanigans are out. I’ll also exclude motorcycle and truck stupidity. So that’s at least a more manageable set to choose from.

So the time me and a buddy had the ‘88 Corolla on two wheels was pretty dumb.

Passing cars in the van with less than two feet to spare was stupid.

Car hide and go seek as not smart, but really fun.

How about the various ill-advised high speed runs on public roads, no that’s too common. We’ve all done that.

Getting an S10 Blazer stuck in the middle of a play field while the police were a block away was monumentally stupid. Maybe that's the one.

Ok we both may know the area I’m talking about. You remember Simmons Road? That long straight? Ok good. I was in my V6 Mustang, in the rain, on that road, heading from the sports park, turned off traction control and floored it. You can Imagine what happened next. I didn’t wreck but damn it was scurry.

Two, well three things, but fortunately nothing bad resulted from any of them.

First, my Dad had a ‘95 Impala SS, which was the old B-body variant. Huge, but fun car to drive. Borrowed it to go hang out with friends one night while in high school. Dropping last friend off in his neighborhood, roads were wet and I was having fun kicking the tail out with throttle going around some of the turns. I’m about to make a right onto another street and give it a little too much throttle - back end swings allllll the way around. If the car was a clock, it would’ve gone from about 6 to 3, the long way, hah. Fortunately, didn’t hit anything, but I almost peed my pants.

Second was in college, I had a ‘97 Mustang GT. Behind my campus was a newly-constructed road, wide, straight and flat. I wanted to see how fast I could get my Mustang going. I take off down this road, full throttle, watching the needle climb. It’s about midnight, so no traffic or anything and very dark. 60...80...100... as the needle starts to climb to 120, I realize that I’m running out of room as I approach the turn I need to make off the road. I slam on the brakes and stock ‘97 Mustang GT brakes are not the greatest. I go wayyyyyyy past my turn, fortunate again to not run into anything.

Did donuts in my 98 Camaro after HS grad rehearsal in parking lot with my buddy. He was yelling stop and when we swug around the second time I almost hit a statie that came out of nowhere (I looked everywhere before doing them). He was furious and asked for license and reg. He went to his car for a few minutes, (side note: every senior saw me pulled over as they were leaving and most knew my car) and came back alittle more calm to the passenger widow and he asked if I knew why he pulled me over. I answered and he began to give a lecture and then pointed to my buddy and said “and you especially don’t need this kind of trouble...” My buddy is African American, I’m not. We give him a weird look, like did he just say that? He immediately realizes what he said and basically tosses my stuff back and takes off. I didn’t think to get his car # because we were sitting there in astonishment that he said that.

I don’t think I’m willing to admit any of the top 5 stupidest things I’ve done in a car. Somewhere in between numbers 6-10, I jumped out of my Mazda Protege 5 to get lunch in high school. Some guy that was driving by yelled YO!!! I turned around and my car was rolling across the parking lot backwards! I sprinted and caught up to it but couldn’t get the door open in time. It slammed into the front bumper of a mini van. I took a look around and skated..;)

The amount of mud and construction sites I made it out of in my 2wd open differentialed S-10 is truly unbelievable. There were so many times I should have gotten stuck, but I didn’t.

The must butt-puckery of them all was when I decided to go bombing down a rural gravel road in February right after *most* of the snow had melted. It looked fine, but when I started down it, it was all mud under that gravel. I was committed though, so I went barreling down at 55-60 mph just to make sure I kept my momentum up.

As I crested a “hill” (central Illinois, so not much of a hill), I could see at the bottom was a big mound of partially melted/refrozen/remelted snow. With nothing to do but keep going, I plowed into that, it turned me hard left into a muddy field. Much oppo ensued, but I managed to keep moving and weave back onto the road. Unfortunately I overshot the road and was now getting oppo in the field on the other side of the road. Again I managed to not stop, get back onto the road, and made it all the way to pavement.

I think it took about an hour for my heart to stop trying to pound its way out of my chest. My truck was absolutely covered in mud, mud was still falling off the undercarriage months later. I had no cell phone, had I gotten stuck, my only recourse would’ve been to walk to the nearest farmhouse and beg for mercy.

I’m not even sure I can figure out the stupidest thing I have done in a car, there have been many. Highlights include:
Doing 95 in a 25 zone and passing a cop while doing it
Driving 50 in a 25 on the wrong side of a road (got pulled over for this one)
Driving down a sidewalk (got lost with a GPS)
Getting air in a 1991 Pontiac Bonneville
yeah I’m gonna stop there, its a good thing I have become a much better driver.

So many things that are mildly stupid. Excess (to the MTO) speed, driving on the wrong side of the road because I was bored, passing in the middle of a string of twisties, road rage, and so on... basically I’m mildly aggressive. I would really call myself balls-out nuts, but I would say I like to follow the path of least resistance.

Anyway, I can’t really pin anything down as stupidest, so I’ll go with most recent. Maxing my truck in Manitoba. Straight line+late=fast. Five things: Manitoba cops are properly sticky. The limit was 100km/h. Manitoba road surfaces suck. The speedo in my truck tops out at 180kph and the needle hits a stop at what looks like 190. And somehow I know all this now.

If I go with stupidest thing done in a vehicle with me present, probably when the driver decided to drift a 15-passenger van down a street that was a close succession of 90deg bends. Yes he was 17, why do you ask?

I’m surprised no one here said road head. That’s a pretty dumb thing to do, if you think about it.

Probably the dumbest for me was when I was young and stupid (and in high school). I was working with a guy who I thought I was racing. He had a fox Body mustang, I had an 86 Honda Accord. I tried to keep up with him, and almost wrecked my car. I overcorrected on a curve and kept sawing the wheel back and forth and spun out. Almost hit an embankment. It's a good thing it was later at night, or I could have killed someone else or myself. Once I backed my car back onto my side of the road and continued, as soon as I rounded the next bend there was a line of cars. Had I not straightened myself out when I did I would have been broadsided.

Sorry, I cannot repeat the stupidest thing I ever did in a car, but there are passengers/witnesses who are probably still cursing my name. . .
Somewhere in the top 10, though, was doing “Streets of San Francisco” jumps off all intersections from 19th Avenue to the ocean at about 60 mph. While drunk. At 3 in the morning. In a heavily-modified ‘71 Pinto. With a full load of drunk underaged passengers. With no rear seat, because I was tired of the complaints I had received from rear-seat passengers. With the unbelted rear-seaters bracing themselves on the headliner to keep from slamming into the roof with every launch. And with every ka-whoomph landing.
Good times!
